It took ten years to create PIRR wine.

It’s a story about the talent, skill and patience of its owners and winemaker - plus the power of brand and creative thinking.

The work we did - alongside award-winning design associate - Studio Parr - on the wine brand concept, identity, brand naming and design contributed to a premium wine that has won a major award straight out of the gate. It doesn’t happen that often, so quickly. It’s got everything a luxury brand story needs…

The right place

Some of the most interesting wine stories begin not with a winery but with a place. In the lower Alentejo of southern Portugal, protected by the ancient town of Almodôvar, over 80 hectares of vineyard sit on some of the highest ground in the region, 350 metres above sea level, adjacent to the Serra do Caldeirão. The land has been farmed since 1442. The schist stones, red soils rich in copper and zinc, and the stark contrast between hot days and cold nights force the vines to work harder, roots pushing deeper in search of water. The deeper the roots, the greater the minerality. This is terroir in the truest sense.

The right history

The story behind the wine is one of change and movement. A family history spanning 18th-century Britain to India, Africa and back to Europe, always putting roots down in new places, sensing new destinies in the air, and the winds of change.

When the decision was made to create something that genuinely evoked the best of this southern Alentejo landscape, the name came from that same spirit: PIRR, an ancient word for a gentle breeze.

The right production

The winemaking approach is neither old nor new world but a considered blend of both. Winemaker Nuno Rodrigues has overseen every aspect of it, from the selection of grape varieties to the precise planting, orientation and exposure of the vines, with a single aim: to present the uniqueness of southern Alentejo's terroir. That means cutting-edge technology alongside French oak barrels, precision irrigation alongside organic practices, modern winery equipment alongside a deep respect for what the land has always known

The right time

Ten years of preparation - vineyard planting, soil work, the patient accumulation of knowledge - preceded the first bottle. When the debut release finally came, the PIRR White Colheita 2023 won the Grand Gold Medal at the 2025 Alentejo Wine Competition, judged by the Confraria dos Enófilos do Alentejo. It was recognised for the expressiveness of its palate - fresh citrus elegantly complemented by nuances of peach and apricot - and for a distinct character that announced Almodôvar as a new and genuinely interesting addition to the wider Alentejo region.

The right brand strategy, naming and label design

The brand identity, naming and label design behind PIRR were conceived to carry all of this - the landscape, the history, the philosophy - into the hands of whoever picks up a bottle. The creative work and the wine itself are inseparable.

Now PIRR is finding its voice beyond Portugal

Recent coverage in the UK press has confirmed what we always believed: that authenticity, quality and genuine passion translate across borders. Tradition and innovation, when they go together, create something truly memorable.
