Sustainability strategy and copy for a spirits maker revolutionising the industry
 

Symphonia No.1 Dry Gin was launched in 2018 as the first spirit produced by The Woodlab Distillery, in Northern Ireland, established by Ulrich Dyer in 2016.

Ric has a PhD in Organic Chemistry and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 30 years before deciding to combine his knowledge of science with his passion for food and drink. Staying true to his scientific background, Ric distils each botanical in rotary evaporators and uses microwaves to help extract flavour from the botanicals.

Rather than importing botanicals from around the world, Ric analysed the flavour molecules of local and sustainably grown botanicals that could achieve the same flavour profile he wanted to achieve.

Anew was tasked with the copywriting, messaging, and presentation, for this award-winning gin brand, of their sustainability policy. A significant element of the brand's story, it needed proper articulation.

We discovered that Ric’s career - studying the structure of molecules, searching for the essence of life - was the basis for Symphonia’s approach to sustainability.

Symphonia recently received a “Highly commended” in the 2021 Footprints Sustainability (Drinks) Awards, ahead of brands such as Innocent Drinks, for its work in this area.  Footprints is the UK’s leading sustainability and ESG expert in food and drink.
